Considering laser resurfacing in New York City? Fraxel Dual and fractional CO2 lasers both address signs of skin aging and certain scars, but they work differently. The best option depends on the condition being treated, skin type, downtime preferences, and a physician’s assessment.
Fraxel Dual uses two non-ablative fractional wavelengths, 1550 nm and 1927 nm. Fractional treatment creates microscopic treatment zones while leaving intervening skin intact. The 1550 nm wavelength is often selected for texture and certain acne scars, while 1927 nm can address superficial pigmentation and sun damage. Treatment typically involves a series of sessions.
Fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers are ablative: they remove microscopic columns of skin and heat surrounding tissue. Depending on settings and patient selection, they may provide more substantial improvement in deeper wrinkles or scars per treatment, but generally involve more visible healing and higher risks than non-ablative fractional treatments.
Fraxel Dual commonly causes redness, swelling, and a sandpaper-like texture for several days, although recovery varies. Fractional CO2 commonly requires a longer period of wound care and social downtime, sometimes one to two weeks or more depending on treatment intensity. Neither is completely downtime-free.
For superficial sun damage and uneven pigmentation, the 1927 nm Fraxel wavelength may be useful. For textural changes and selected acne scars, 1550 nm Fraxel or fractional CO2 may be considered. More pronounced wrinkles or deeper scars sometimes benefit from ablative resurfacing, but stronger treatment is not automatically the safer or better choice. Some pigmentation disorders, including melasma, require special caution because heat and inflammation may worsen discoloration.
Both procedures can cause burns, prolonged redness, acne flares, infection, pigment changes, or scarring. Risk depends on skin tone, recent tanning, medications, history of cold sores, treatment settings, and aftercare. People with darker skin tones may have a greater risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with some resurfacing approaches. A personalized evaluation is essential.
