Treatment for severe underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) at Dermacare Medical in Manhattan and Tappan. Dr. Yuriy Yagudin evaluates your symptoms and discusses whether BOTOX is appropriate when topical treatments have not provided adequate relief.
Excessive underarm sweating can interfere with clothing choices, work and everyday activities even when you are not exercising or feeling hot. BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) temporarily blocks the nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands. It is FDA-approved for severe primary underarm hyperhidrosis in adults when topical agents have not worked well enough.
Dr. Yagudin reviews when sweating began, which areas are affected, previous antiperspirant treatments, medications and relevant medical conditions. New or generalized sweating may require evaluation for an underlying cause before considering injections. BOTOX’s established hyperhidrosis indication is for the underarms; its safety and effectiveness for sweating in other body areas have not been established.
Treatment is performed in the office with multiple small injections into the skin of each underarm. The FDA-recommended dose is 50 units per underarm, or 100 units total. Dr. Yagudin may map the sweating area before treatment. Injection-site discomfort or small bruises can occur, and most patients can return to their usual routine afterward.
Sweating generally begins to decrease during the first week, although the response varies. The effect is temporary: clinical studies reported a median duration of approximately 6–7 months after the first treatment. Repeat treatment may be considered when excessive sweating returns. Your response and follow-up plan are individualized.
Tell Dr. Yagudin about any prior reaction to botulinum toxin, infection at the proposed injection site, neuromuscular disorders, breathing or swallowing problems, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Common local effects include injection-site pain and bruising. Rarely, botulinum toxin effects can spread beyond the injection area and cause serious swallowing or breathing difficulties. Your physician will review contraindications, risks and alternatives before treatment.
A single treatment session commonly covers both underarms. Because the effect wears off, repeat sessions may be appropriate when symptoms return.
Most patients return to normal activities shortly after the appointment. You may have temporary tenderness or small bruises at injection sites; follow your physician’s aftercare instructions.
Adults with severe primary underarm sweating that has not responded adequately to topical agents may be candidates. An evaluation is important to exclude other causes of excessive sweating.
Botox for severe primary underarm hyperhidrosis reduces nerve signaling to sweat glands when topical treatment has not provided adequate relief. New or generalized sweating needs assessment for other causes before a local cosmetic treatment is chosen.
Tell your physician what you have used and how well it worked. The established underarm indication is for severe symptoms not adequately managed with topical agents.
No. Reduced sweating is temporary, and maintenance may be appropriate when symptoms return. The response and interval differ among patients.
Discuss a new pattern, fever, weight changes, medications or generalized sweating. These findings may require medical evaluation rather than immediately proceeding to injections.
For facial expression lines, explore Botox Cosmetic treatment. Separate cosmetic uses include trapezius Botox and masseter Botox for jaw reduction. These treatments address different concerns from underarm sweating; suitability is determined during an individual consultation.
